Overview of the Overberg 

The Overberg region of the Cape is in the southernmost part of South Africa and is one of the six regions in the Western Cape Province.  The word Overberg translates ‘the other side of the mountain’, referring to the land beyond the Hottentots Holland mountain range.

This segment of the Cape South coast is known for its beautiful beaches, mountain ranges with interesting geological formations, wild flowers, abundant birdlife and forest plantations.  Memories from the past told through museums, showcased in shipwrecks and old architectural treasures mix pleasantly with new developments in the various towns and villages. 

There are many words to describe the Overberg however to put it simply; the gentleness of the countryside, rich wheat and barley fields, green pastures, a sparkling coastline make up this truly spectacular region of the country.  Balmy summer days and crisp winter months makes the Overberg a perfect area to visit at any time of the year.

The Overberg is filled with interesting places to see and things to do.  One of the most fascinating experiences is watching the explosive meeting of the expansive Atlantic and Indian oceans at Cape Agulhas.  The only Apple Museum in the world is situated in the Elgin Valley, well worth a visit.  There are a number of beaches en-route which have the famous Blue Flag status for their water quality, safety and environmental standards.  

The Overberg is part of the World Heritage Site Cape Floral Kingdom, which is reflected in the magnificent floral displays covering the region.  Walking and hiking routes are criss-crossed throughout and the entire area is a bird watchers paradise.

Whether the Overberg is your final destination or you are just passing through, it will definitely leave an impression.
