Angling In South Africa, Overberg Region

Many people in South Africa enjoy the fishing routine of tying fishing hooks, baiting, and casting in search of a successful catch. A combination of both luck and skill is usually needed to successfully catch a fish, but an understanding of the elements involved and techniques employed are also key factors to being a successful angler.

The Overberg region stretches from Rooi Els (Western Point) through to Witsands (Eastern Point) and is one of the most productive and also scenic angling areas in South Africa. Yellowtail or Albacore, King Mackerel, Bronze Bream, Black Musselcracker or Poenskop, Cape Snoek, Kob, Wildeperd, Elf or Shad, Galjoen, Geelbek or Cape Salmon, Harder, Leervis or Garrick, White Steenbras or Pignose Grunter, Maasbanker, Mackerel, White Musselcracker or Witbiskop, Roman, Red Stumpnose, Rock Cod, Tiger or Grunter, White Stump, Strepie or Karanteen, Sharks, Rays are all caught on a regular basis from the rocks and/or boats.

The area is ideal for the family as well. Struisbaai is the most popular coastal fishing holiday Mecca in the Southern Cape Overberg. An important attraction in the town is the group of historic fishers' cottages & the minuscule thatched church which are now all national heritage sites. The longest uninterrupted white beach in the Southern Hemisphere? Oh yes! It's right here at Struisbaai, all 14km of it! A wonderful walking beach with safe swimming in the turquoise warm water for all. Struisbaai beach are rated one of the Kite boarding hot spots in South Africa & hosts popular competitions during the "Geelstertfees" (Yellowtail Festival) in March.

From the main beach you can follow the wooden boardwalk all the way to the quaint, bustling fishing harbor who attracts photograhers & artists alike. It is indeed a pleasure to see the fishing boats coming in laden with a catch destined for community supper tables and the restaurants of the area.

Explore the region and visit its majestic towns. Arniston, only 2 hours drive from Cape Town, is an old fishing village with a quaint atmosphere. The original name of the town is Waenhuiskrans, meaning wagon house cliff, where the beaches are pearly white and the dunes, vast and unspoilt. Visit Bredasorp with its Shipwreck museum where sunken ships have found their way in. Come and see the spectacular displays of the Bredasdorp lily.

The hospitality of the people of the Cape Agulhas region and the beauty of the surrounding countryside is certain to enrich all and impact the wish to return to enjoy the ambience of this region again. Cape Agulhas is located only 176km south east of Cape Town. Its name, Portuguese for "needles", refers to the rocks and reefs that have wrecked many ships. The region offers a veritable paradise of nature in all her glory, which will delight even the most discerning tourist, botanist, hiker, photographer, historian, bird watcher or angler. Bordered by blue mountain ranges, set in undulating hills in a kaleidoscope of gold, green and brown, with endless beaches and dunes. Fragrances of fynbos merge with mountain and sea air.

Next time you are visiting South Africa, or the Western Cape, include the Overberg as part of your plans. This is the angling hot spot of the Western Cape!
