Bontebok National Park, Swellendam
Swellendam connects the Overberg to the Garden Route and is a beautiful hamlet situated on the Koornlands River. Swellendam's location at the base of the Langeberg Mountains and near the Tradouw Pass on Route 62 makes it the ideal base for exploring the surrounding area.
Hiking is a popular activity in an area surrounded by Nature Reserves; bring your binoculars because the fauna is spectacular! A kaleidoscope of flora and fauna offers excellent photographic opportunities. The Bontebok National Park, the Marloth Nature Reserve, and the expansive De Hoop Nature Reserve are the three nearby reserves.
Bontebok National Park is the smallest of South Africa's national parks, measuring only 28 square kilometers. Therefore, the park is extremely beneficial for animal sightings! The Bontebok is an antelope of medium size with a multicolored pelt that is indigenous to the Western Cape. This species is regrettably on the "Red List of Threatened Species" maintained by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. There is, however, an abundance of magnificent rare fynbos, abundant birdlife, tortoises, mountain zebras, and much more to observe. There are hiking and mountain biking trails, as well as picnic areas, along the Brede River.
