Information on some of the towns found in the Overberg Region

ARNISTON

Named after a ship that wrecked here in 1815, Arniston is known for its beautiful and pristine beaches coupled with excellent fishing spots.  As one of the world’s greatest getaways, Arniston is popular with visitors all year round.  Colourful fishing boats dock at harbour at the end of each day with their little boats filled with the days takings.  Rare seashells lie in the surf and unassuming thatched cottages dot the shoreline – a beautiful and glorious national heritage in its entirety, Arniston is definitely the firm favourite holiday destination.

BREDASDORP

Bredasdorp is located in the southern part of the Overberg region and is a small town filled with historical churches and unique art galleries as well as the Shipwreck Museum, which tells the story of more than 140 ships that wrecked along the nearby Agulhas Reef.  Special places to visit are the Heuningberg Reserve and the Kapula Candle Factory.  The town is also an important centre for the farmers in the area.  One of the farms outside of Bredasdorp grows the largest milkwood of South Africa and is a national monument.

BAARDSKEERDERSBOS

A peaceful community en-route to Cape Agulhas from Gansbaai is Baardskeerdersbos, affectionately known as B’bos.  With landscapes of vineyards, olive plantations and multi-coloured fynbos flower-farms, this little hamlet is filled with unique and wonderful things.  Situated on the banks of the marshy Bushman’s River it has a small selection of trendy popular restaurants producing delicious local cuisine, wines and artwork - B’bos is well worth a stop-over.

BARRYDALE

Barrydale is an exceptional and special place that can be visited all year round.  Known as the Gateway to the Overberg and situated at the foot of the Langeberg Mountains, this amazing little Karoo village has enduring countryside charm with friendly residents and excellent infrastructure.  The landscape is perfect for great trails and pathways with the more adventurous climbing the Langeberg Mountain.  Barrydale has the perfect climate for winemaking with some of South Africa’s premium wines and brandy’s being produced here, this is not to mention the grapes, apples amongst other delicious fruit which flourish in this area.
