In South Africa, we are blessed to have great white sharks close to our shores, which allows us to safely introduce them to our clients. Not only do we have the great white shark but we now have the bronze whaler shark also known as the copper shark. Shark cage-diving remains a niche and unique product, one which more and more people have at the very top of their bucket lists especially when visiting South Africa.

White Shark Projects has set a benchmark for responsible tourism in the industry, which involves sharing our country's natural and cultural riches, whilst contributing positively to the preservation and growth of the local community and environment. THE BOAT RIDE / SHARK TOUR

The boat ride to our dive site is about twenty minutes around four nautical miles. Once we are at sea, the sharks run the show – the length of the trip depends on them. White sharks are nomadic and there are no resident sharks living in the bay: whilst bronze whaler sharks congregate in "herds" and are seen throughout the year. This makes our adventures unpredictable as we never know what is going to happen, it also makes them very exciting and unique. Every excursion is different from the next, ensuring each guest has a personal and exclusive interaction with our sharks. Our expedition facilitates a greater awareness of the sharks, and we involve guests in data taking, we answer questions and tell our stories, providing interesting facts while at sea.

The trip lasts around three – four hours at sea, but this is influenced by shark activity, number of clients on board, as well as weather and sea conditions. Diving is optional and no one is forced to get into the cage

SHARK CAGE DIVING

Cage-diving is by far the safest way to have a close encounter with our sharks as it allows divers to get up close and personal with these amazing animals. The cage is attached to the side of the boat and remains attached throughout the dive. Guests are helped in and out of the cage by the crew and are never alone, as the cage can hold up to 6 people at a time. No diving experience is necessary, as a simple breath holding method is used.

All diving equipment and towels are provided, including 7mm wetsuits to insulate guests from the cold Atlantic Ocean. A typical dive will last about twenty to thirty minutes and ensures the diver has plenty of opportunities to take photos and to admire these majestic creatures. Guests have the option to go into the cage twice and stay longer in there If they request.

In the circumstances that we have no shark sightings we will offer a voucher to return for free which is valid for three years.

WHERE TO FIND US

We are situated in Kleinbaai, Gansbaai about two hours’ drive from Cape Town. For self-drive clients, we issue detailed directions with GPS locations.

Our shuttle bus is available to collect from hotels in Cape Town and its surrounds. The shuttle delivers guests to our doorstep, however, please be advised that collection may be as early as 04h00!
