Rooi-Els is a small seaside village which forms part of the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve and is situated in the Overberg region of the Western Cape, South Africa.

Geography and History

Rooi-Els is famous for its magnificent views over False Bay and is situated beside the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve. The town roads are narrow, un-tarred and without street lights.

Klein-Hangklipmountain dominates the village, and is home to a pair of Verreaux's Eagles. Other animals that may be noted are Chacma baboons, Rock hyrax, small antilope, African clawless otters and occasionally Caracal and Leopard.

Activities

There is a diverse range of activities available in this area. This town is great for diving, angling and other water activities or you could take a drive along the coast to nearby Stony Point where you can watch penguins playing in the waves.

Rooiels is a favourite angling and shellfish-diving spot, with a rich variety of seaplants along its coast. Do not forget a permit is required for the harvesting of ANY marine species.
